Pitch Wars Bio!

Hi there! I'm Stefanie Wass, a middle grade writer represented by Danielle Smith of Red Fox Literary. I'm a graduate of Miami University and a former fifth and sixth grade teacher. These days, I write full-time. When I'm not writing contemporary MG, I beta-read, explore everything in the genre, and attend as many SCBWI conferences as my budget will allow! I am a hard-core believer in the editorial process. (Yup, I believe in post-it notes, highlighters, printing out the ms, reading it aloud, reading it on my Nook, and sending it to umpteen beta readers.) Perfectionist? Um, yeah.

The type of manuscripts I love? Realistic MG contemporary. Do I like fantasy? Nope. Historical? Nope. A touch of magical realism? Well, sure...but only if it is light-handed. What seals the deal for me? Spot-on voice. Character-driven stories with a ton of heart. Think ONE FOR THE MURPHYS, THE JUNCTION OF SUNSHINE AND LUCKY, LOVE, AUBREY, and ABSOLUTELY ALMOST.

I have a soft spot for dogs, so an animal story might be for me.But honestly, it's all about the writing. If you have a manuscript that is literary in nature with writing like THE SECRET HUM OF A DAISY, then I am crossing my fingers you will send it my way!

Best of luck with Pitch Wars!

  3. I'm so glad you were so clear! Mine is not realistic, even though it has a reality TV show in it, so I know you are probably not the best mentor for me this year. But I can't wait to see your mentee, because I do like to read contemporary MG.
